Two recent watercolours after a while painting in oils. A snowy Exmoor scene and a view of Derryinver in Connemara.
Two paintings, one oil and one watercolour. The oil is of Ladram Bay looking over to Sidmouth on the Jurassic coast in East Devon with its characteristic red sandstone cliffs. The watercolour is a quick and loose sketch of some orange roses in our garden.
I had a wonderful week staying in Croyde with my five gorgeous grandchildren. On the day that wasn’t sunny we all walked to Baggy Point. This is a view looking back towards Croyde from the coastal path leading to Baggy Point.
I’m loving experimenting with oils at the moment including attending a great workshop by Hester Berry, a brilliant North Devon artist.?
I needed to get back to painting watercolours. Here are two recent Spring flower paintings plus the Connemara coast and a view over the village of Chittlehampton in North Devon.
This is Ferry Road in Topsham. I walk along here almost every day. Drawn in ink with a bamboo/matchstick (taught to me by John Hoar) and painted in watercolour.
Like us all I’ve been spending most of my time indoors with just the occasional shop and regular daily exercise. All this has meant quite a lot of painting, ranging from John Hoar DVDs (I was due to go on one of his courses so substituted DVDs instead), my Connemara and Norfolk sketchbooks. Here’s a selection of them.
This is a very loose painting where I had enormous fun with water flowing in great puddles over the sky area. I took my lead from a John Hoar painting and in his words, ‘took the courage in my hands and sploshed away. It was great fun and I was happy with the results .
This is the iconic Bridge Inn, Topsham in moody sepia. The Bridge is popular with good beer lovers and has been run by the same family for over one hundred years. It’s also the only pub in England that has had an official visit from the Queen! Sepia is a good medium in watercolour to concentrate on tone- they key to any painting.
I suppose as I improve as a painter that I get better at giving an impression of a subject whether it be a landscape, towns spec or flowers. Here is a quick painting of some flowers, which I did as a demo recently. I wasn’t interested in botanical accuracy but rather I was interested in conveying the ‘bunchiness’ of flowers.
The second painting is looking down Priest Lane towards the Abbey in Pershore, Worcestershire. I chose Sepia to convey the tones which adds, I hope, to a believable composition.
